In autumn, in Lozère, the trees take on stunning colours and, at their feet, the season’s visitors begin to appear: mushrooms. With around 230,000 hectares of forest, Lozère is the place to be for any enthusiast of foraging for ‘delicacies’. Here you’ll find porcini, chanterelles, morels, mousserons and other wonders of Lozère’s flora. The department welcomes visitors keen to explore the world of mushrooms, thanks to numerous accommodation providers and restaurants offering packages dedicated to this theme.

Autumn is also the perfect time of year to enjoy the Lozère countryside, ablaze with shades of red, orange and yellow, to relax and unwind, wrapped up in a blanket with a hot drink, and to go onchestnut-picking trips in the heart of the Cévennes valleys.

Lozère chestnuts

Lozère, and the Cévennes in particular, is a land of chestnuts. Since time immemorial, chestnuts have provided sustenance for both people and animals in the Cévennes: the ‘bread tree’ (the chestnut tree) is found throughout the Cévennes mountains and produces a fruit that has always been widely consumed. Nowadays, many producers and retailers harvest and process chestnuts. Why not try them yourself – fresh, roasted over a wood fire, or as jam… You could even try your hand at our famous chestnut fondant recipe. A real treat for the taste buds!

An unforgettable experience

It is in autumn that you can hear the stags bellowing in Lozère. Between mid-September and mid-October, the stags fight for the does and bellow in an attempt to attract them. On the Margeride or Aubrac plateaus, on Mont-Lozère or in the Cévennes valleys, at dusk, join an organised tour to hear this deep, impressive bellow. You might even be lucky enough to spot them… Thrills guaranteed!

Autumn is often mushroom season too! Lozère is full of hidden spots for mushroom hunting… but don’t ask us where to look – these spots are well kept secret! However, if you do come across any mushrooms whilst out walking, do feel free to pick them… And above all, only cook the edible ones! A perfect autumn activity

Make the most of sunny days to stroll through the narrow streets of Lozère’s market towns, particularly the department’s three of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’: La Garde-Guérin, Le Malzieu-Ville and Sainte-Enimie.
