The Interdepartmental Association for the Causses and Cévennes has just produced a free audio guide to help visitors explore the Causses and Cévennes region – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – by car.
The route, between the Cévennes and the Grands Causses
Once you have set the route, the walk begins at the square in front of the Tourist Office and Cévennes National Park Visitor Centre, next to the old Florac railway station. Visitors follow the Tarn valley as far as Molines, near Ispagnac, and then climb up to the Causse de Sauveterre. At the Choizal farm, the route heads towards Sainte-Enimie, taking a detour via the Boissets Departmental Estate before descending into the Gorges du Tarn. In Sainte-Enimie, the route leads up onto the Causse Méjean; after an explanation of several agricultural and pastoral sites, and a walk past the Przewalski’s horses, the tour ends with the descent to Florac.
A culture of agro-pastoralism
Here is an original way to explore the arid high plateaus of the Causses and their iconic landscapes, which bear witness to centuries of agro-pastoral culture. Through this road audio guide, visitors gain a better understanding of their origins, their exceptional value and the challenges facing their heritage. This tourist route is the first to be developed by the Interdepartmental Agreement; others will follow each year to help visitors discover the Causses and Cévennes UNESCO World Heritage Site.
