What is there to do in Marvejols, in Lozère?

Start your visit by strolling through the Porte du Soubeyran, one of the three remaining gates in the town’s medieval fortifications. This impressive stone gate offers a glimpse into Marvejols’ medieval history. Perfectly preserved, it bears witness to the town’s turbulent past, particularly during the Wars of Religion. The inscriptions on the gate tell the story of the town’s reconstruction following these wars. Take a moment to admire the breathtaking view over Marvejols.

Every year, the town of Marvejols comes alive during the Occitan Festivals in June with “Fest’Oc” and in July with “Fête Occitane”. This vibrant celebration of Occitan culture and language offers a true immersion in local life. For sports and adventure enthusiasts, rock climbing in the Vallée de l’Enfer is an unmissable experience, set amidst these gorges naturally formed by the regressive erosion of the River Crueize. Located a few kilometres from Marvejols, this climbing site is renowned for the quality of its rock and the variety of its routes, suitable for all levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, you’ll enjoy an exceptional natural setting whilst pushing your limits.

Tucked away in the small village of Sainte-Lucie, discover Les Loups du Gévaudan, Europe’s largest wolf park, which offers an unforgettable encounter with these fascinating animals. Spanning over 20 hectares, you’ll be able to observe more than a hundred wolves of various species living in semi-freedom. Beyond simply observing them, you’ll learn about the conservation of this species and its ecosystem. Guided tours will allow you to learn more about wolf behaviour, their place in mythology and history, as well as the current challenges facing their conservation.

Lake Moulinet, situated just 14 minutes from Marvejols, is a true haven of peace. Surrounded by greenery, this lake offers an idyllic setting for a relaxing day out or for water sports. Come and hire a stand-up paddleboard or a pedalo to explore the lake. For the more adventurous among you, have fun and test your skills on the AQUAFUN inflatable obstacle course. The lake’s shores are also perfect for a walk or a cycle ride, with several signposted trails.

Not far from Marvejols, the educational farm “L’Arche de Noé” welcomes you for a day of discovery and family fun. You and your children will have the chance to see lots of farm animals, learn how they are reared and looked after, and even take part in some tasks such as milking the cows or making cheese and bread.  Thanks to the Musée de l’Arche, a museum of traditional farming, you’ll learn about animal-drawn transport and the evolution of agriculture.

If you enjoy hiking, the Pic de Mus – a basalt peak rising to an altitude of 1,327 metres – is a must-visit. This hike, suitable for everyone, takes you through a beautiful Scots pine forest to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the region. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic, so don’t forget to pack your lunch!

The Col de Bonnecombe, situated half an hour’s drive from Marvejols, is another excellent spot for nature lovers and hikers. In summer, you can watch the transhumance of herds of cows, an age-old tradition that remains very much alive in Lozère. In winter, the pass transforms into a ski resort, with cross-country ski trails and snowshoe trails. And all year round, you can enjoy the untamed beauty of this mountain landscape, home to exceptional flora and fauna.

Discover the transhumance on the Aubrac Plateau. Every year, at the end of May, farmers adorn their finest cows with collars and wreaths of flowers to lead them up to the high pastures. This traditional festival, which brings together locals and visitors alike, is packed with celebrations: folk dance performances, concerts in Occitan, tastings of delicious aligot, and more. A colourful day not to be missed!

Finally, do take the time to explore the Route des Lacs (D52) – or the ‘silver road’ – by motorbike or bike, as you ride through the vast, endless plateaus of the Aubrac and past its peaceful lakes.
