Hell Valley

The Vallée de l’Enfer (Valley of Hell) is located not far from Saint-Léger-de-Peyre in the Gévaudan region. The gorge, naturally carved by the headward erosion of the Crueize River, reaches depths of nearly 400 meters in places!

Despite the valley’s steep, narrow profile, a small road and even a railway line (the 19th-century Béziers–Neussargues route) run through it; the latter required the construction of the Viaduc de l’Enfer, designed by Bauby and Boyer (the latter also designed the Garabit Viaduct with Eiffel).

The valley’s vegetation varies depending on the slope’s exposure, creating a diverse landscape within this natural heritage site.
