Every spring, a unique spectacle draws curious onlookers, nature lovers, and those passionate about rural traditions: the Transhumance of Aubrac cows, in the heart of the Aubrac Regional Natural Park. In the Massif Central, between Aveyron, Cantal, and Lozère, the herds make their way to the summer pastures, guided by their herders and teams of horses, to spend the warmer months grazing on the high-altitude meadows. A rare and profoundly human encounter, between sky, earth, and animals. Every year, around Saint-Urbain’s Day (May 25), the Aubrac cows leave the Lot Valley and the limestone plateaus to reach the high summer pastures, where the air is purer and the grass greener thanks to the numerous water sources. They will remain there until at least October, traditionally until October 13 (Saint Géraud’s Day), surrounded by their calves, at an altitude between 1,300 and 1,400 m.
