Horses in Lozère
The cradle of equestrian endurance, home to the internationally renowned 160 km Florac race, Lozère is home to numerous horse breeding farms. From purebred Arabians descended from the famous Persik to Mérens horses, donkeys and draught horses, all types of equines and all disciplines – from endurance, dressage and eventing to horseball and even equine-assisted therapy – are possible in Lozère. With its five distinct natural regions and vast, unspoilt expanses, the department is particularly well-suited to horse riding. For those who prefer guided rides and for beginners, there are plenty of operators who will be delighted to introduce you to the sport and guide you along Lozère’s trails.
Equestrian competition
Marked out by the Cévennes National Park and a firm favourite with riders, this multi-day horse riding trail – or the ‘160 km Florac tourist circuit’ – largely follows the route of the legendary endurance riding event. Renowned for the beauty of its landscapes, this loop passes through a wide variety of habitats characteristic of the Causses, the Gorges, Mont Aigoual and the Cévennes.
Although dotted with stopover gîtes and equestrian farms, the route is nevertheless technical and demanding, and should be adapted to the abilities of both the horses and their riders.
