Description

The "Emperor's Chestnut Trees" are so named because they were planted under Napoleon III by Russian prisoners captured during the Crimean War in 1855. The Rieucros ("hollow stream" in Occitan) has deeply cut into the limestone and reached the mica schist base favorable to the growth of chestnut trees.
