The Arches of Saint-Pierre
Natural landmarks in the heart of the forest
These famous arches, truly unique formations created by the erosion of thelimestone plateaus, can be admired along this trail in the commune of Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers. These natural structures, sculpted by time, water and wind, stand amongst the conifers along a 4 km walk (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). They are truly monumental, monolithic works of art, standing 6 metres tall, which you can explore with your family. The Grand Place and its column, the Baumelle and Homme Mort caves, and even the remains of a resin-harvesters’ village taking us back 5,500 years to theNeolithic era are just some of theother geological and historical attractions you can see as you walk along this trail through an area that was only rediscovered in the last century.
Marvejols, the royal capital
In the footsteps of Henry IV
Marvejols is a ‘royal town’. It owes this status to Philip IV the Fair, who made it the administrative capital of Gévaudan in 1307. In the 16th century, the majority of its population converted to Protestantism and sided with the future King Henry IV. This support would cost them dearly: a siege by Catholic troops, the destruction of the town… and the massacre of its inhabitants. Following the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes, Henry IV had the town rebuilt, a decision that earned him the statue still standing today in the town centre. The gates of Chanelles, Théron and Soubeyran, emblematic of Marvejols, are the most visible and striking reminders of this history. A discovery trail and guided tours of the town allow you to learn more about the rich history of the ‘beauty of Gévaudan’. Don’t miss the market, held every Saturday morning between the statue of the Bourbon and the Soubeyran Gate.
Aven Armand
Concerts in the Main Basement
The famous Aven Armand cave, situated in the commune of Hures-la-Parade, between Meyrueis and Sainte-Enimie, hosts a series of concerts underground every summer. Right in the heart of the natural cave, amongst some of the most beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, and with exceptional acoustics. Classical choral music, jazz, brass bands, guitar… all styles are brought to life here. An initiative that combines natural heritage with exceptional cultural events. Please note that places for the concerts are limited and therefore in high demand. Do remember to book as early as possible.
