Synopsis
A jaded young dandy, Onéguine sets the shy Tatiana’s heart aflame at first sight. Overcoming her shyness, she writes him a passionate love letter. Alas! He responds with a brutal rejection, coupled with a moral lecture. Yet, following a duel and several years later, he falls in love with the young woman who has now become Prince Gremin’s wife. Will she yield to his advances?

‘Eugene Onegin tells the story of a love affair that doesn’t work out.’ This is how Ralph Fiennes summarises the plot of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s opera, inspired by Pushkin’s work.
Fascinated by Russian culture and drawn to the dramatic intensity of the composer’s music, Ralph Fiennes makes his debut as an opera director. His choice of a simple visual style to evoke the Russian countryside or a ballroom is intended to bring out the emotions of the characters, who are as complex as they are modern.
