Jean Valjean, a former convict who escaped from the penal colony where he spent 16 years for stealing bread, now devotes himself to doing good for those around him. He forges a new identity for himself as a respected member of society and comes to the aid of Fantine, a dying factory worker, promising to save her daughter, little Cosette, from the clutches of the Thénardiers, the innkeepers who exploit and mistreat her. Whilst Valjean looks after the child and raises her as his own daughter, his past eventually catches up with him in the form of Inspector Javert, who has relentlessly pursued him all these years. Despite the social upheaval rocking France, the fates of Valjean, Cosette, her lover Marius and Javert become intertwined in a bustling, revolutionary Paris. Through struggles, sacrifices and a deep desire for justice, Valjean strives to complete
his journey of redemption and to offer Cosette a future of love and freedom.
