LE BALLET AU CINÉMA : ROMÉO ET JULIETTE

The Cinéma Le Trianon in Mende presents Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “ROMEO AND JULIET” – a ballet in three acts.

Synopsis:
In Verona, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet meet and fall madly in love, but their two families are bound by an age-old feud. Driven by a passion as overwhelming as it is impossible, the two lovers face a tragic fate that unites them forever.

Presentation:
Elevated to the status of a myth by Shakespeare, the story of Romeo and Juliet had to wait until the 20th century to be brought to life as a ballet, thanks to the music of Sergei Prokofiev in 1935. In his production, created for the Paris National Opera Ballet in 1984, Rudolf Nureyev takes this brilliant and energetic score and crafts a lavish, particularly cinematic version.
His choreography focuses on depicting young Romeo’s transformation into a man, thanks to a passionate Juliet who tragically enters adulthood. Scenes of balls, youthful provocations and duels set against a magnificently recreated Italian Renaissance backdrop lend substance, depth and power to the passion of the lovers of Verona as they grapple with the age-old hatreds of their families.
