Manuela, a nurse in Madrid, is raising her son Esteban on her own.
For his 17th birthday, she decides to take him to see *A Streetcar Named Desire*, starring her favourite actress, Huma Rojo. But as they leave the theatre, he decides to run after her car to ask for an autograph and is hit by a car.
Following this tragic death and overwhelmed by grief at the loss of her son, Manuela decides to leave everything behind and travel to Barcelona to find Esteban’s father and break the news to him.
There, she meets up with old acquaintances and takes a job working for Huma.
This film is a tribute to human resilience and the complexity of family relationships.
It won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by the César and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
It remains one of Almodóvar’s most iconic works.
