François Gérane, a young, unstable and passionate rebel, defies his father – a lawyer – one time too many. His father disowns him and has him committed to a psychiatric hospital. There, he befriends Heurtevent, a man with epilepsy, with whom he hatches an escape plan… Adapted from Hervé Bazin’s novel, based on his personal experience, the film deals not so much with madness as with confinement… The Franju-Mocky duo offers us a terrifying insight into the hell of psychiatric isolation.
