THE BEALS

Beal

in ALTIER

Béals are hydraulic structures that allow for gravity-fed irrigation by diverting water from a stream. These canals are found in various locations throughout the Lozère department, but a number of them are concentrated around the Altier Valley. The gentle gradient of the béals allows water to be carried several kilometers from the intake, supplying plots and terraces that would otherwise be inaccessible. Various agricultural crops benefit from them, including chestnut trees, apple trees, and meadows. Since 2016, the Copage association has been working to promote the heritage value of these irrigation canals, recognizing the specific artisanal, historical, and technical knowledge and expertise they require. A film has been produced to showcase this practice and all that it represents.
