TEMPLE OF FLORAC

Rebuilt three times throughout its history, the Protestant temple in Florac bears witness to its painful past, marked by religious conflicts and the difficult coexistence of religious communities in the Cévennes region. The facade of the massive, rectangular building consists simply of a projecting gable in the center of which is a clock, all surmounted by a bell gable. The entrance door boasts a more elaborate architectural treatment, inspired by the Tuscan order, framed by two columns and topped with a pediment. The inscription "Reformed Church of France" appears on the entablature. Inside, there is little furniture or decoration, apart from the pulpit. This general simplicity reflects the liturgical practice of the Reformed religion, with its emphasis on preaching. The current building was constructed in 1833, the same year as the church, a symbolic act marking the return of religious tolerance.
