STATUE OF BERTRAND DU GUESCLIN

In the beautiful square, where once important cattle fairs were held, a bronze statue by Hector Lemaine was erected in 1894 in memory of the great Constable. History tells us that Constable Bertrand Du Guesclin laid siege to Châteauneuf-de-Randon at the end of June 1380. But he died on July 13th without having been able to recapture the town, and it was on his coffin that the leader of the besieged, Pierre de Galard, presented the Constable with the keys to the city. Tradition holds that Du Guesclin died from drinking, on a very hot day, the excessively cold water of the Glauze spring, located west of the town.
