SAINT-VINCENT CHURCH OF CANILHAC

Romanesque, Church and Priory

in CANILHAC

The parish church is accessed by crossing the enclosed cemetery that surrounds it, then passing under the projecting porch that precedes the entrance. It is a church built of limestone and red sandstone for the corners. This sandstone, with its distinctive color, is characteristic of the area around Banassac. The building is constructed in a very pronounced Romanesque style: the nave and side aisles have barrel vaults, the pillars are massive, and the windows are narrow. The transverse arches of the nave stand out from the rest of the structure because they are made of red sandstone. The oldest part consists mainly of the chancel and the apse to the south. The side aisles were added at an unknown date. The church is also of interest because it has retained its stone paving. In the north chapel, a niche houses a monolithic statue believed to represent Saint Vincent.
