SAINT-PRIVAT CHURCH

The church of Combret, built in 1843, is dedicated to Saint Privat. Its distinctive roof, shaped like an inverted boat hull (known as a "Philibert" roof), is the first striking feature of the building. Its simple plan consists of a single nave of two bays, flanked by two side chapels near the chancel. Inside, the church is beautifully decorated with a collection of furnishings, including statues and paintings, particularly the painting on the left depicting a martyr recognizable by her palm. The chancel is given a monumental treatment, notably with a large painting of the Crucifixion, framed by two fluted columns engaged against the wall, and surmounted by the liturgical inscription GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO, Glory to God in the highest. Inside the triangular pediment is a representation of God the Father. A sky-blue plaster finish on the vault completes the ensemble.
