SAINT-MARTIN CHURCH OF AUXILLAC

Modern, Church and Priory

in LA CANOURGUE

The church has a Latin cross plan, with three bays vaulted in semicircular barrel vaults and two side chapels. The interior is entirely covered with well-preserved murals dating from 1921. It was in this year that the church's condition was deemed dilapidated, and major restoration work was undertaken at the instigation of Charles de Ligonnès, the mayor of Auxillac and bishop of Rodez. The walls, the nave vault, and the chapel arches are painted in a faux-ashlar style, and drapery motifs adorn the sides of the circular apse and the chapel walls. A Sacred Heart surrounded by two angels is painted on the apse's semi-dome. Alongside this pictorial program, the wall paneling and wooden furnishings form a coherent and richly decorated ensemble. The high altar, associated with the altarpiece, has a homogeneous decoration, as do the celebrant's seats and the chapel altars, which are identical and function in pairs.
