SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH

The village of Termes is home to a late church, dating from the 17th century. Located on the heights above the village, it is one of only three exceptions in the Highlands. It is one of the few churches in the region to feature a low spire rather than a bell gable or a bell tower. Built entirely of granite, it nevertheless remains true to the Romanesque style through its austerity and homogeneity. Its distinctive feature also lies in the interior of its sanctuary. The walls and ribbed vaults are adorned with polychrome paintings. The warm-colored paintings decorate the chancel on the lower walls and the arches of the vaults. The chapels are decorated with plant motifs at their openings and with checkerboard patterns of color on the arches of their quadripartite vaults. The chancel houses a magnificent crucifix, and the chapels contain beautiful altarpieces on which are placed statues of remarkable saints.
