SAINT COLUMBUS CHURCH

Romanesque, Church and Priory

in SAINTE-COLOMBE-DE-PEYRE

The earliest mention of the Church of Sainte-Colombe dates back to 1109, in the will of Aldebert II of Peyre. This church is dedicated to the martyred saint of Sens, Saint Colombe. Romanesque in style, it blends perfectly into the landscape of churches in the region. Its homogeneity and simplicity, combined with a bell gable with three openings, are typical architectural features of the churches of the Aubrac region. From its very rectilinear architecture emerges the entrance portal on the west facade, surmounted by an oculus. The interior of the church remains simple, featuring a single nave with a pointed arch vault. Only the bays stand out from the homogeneity of the walls, defined by wide vaults and columns of large granite blocks. At the entrance to the chancel stands the statue representing the martyred saint of Sens, Saint Colombe, the church's patron saint. The choir, meanwhile, houses a magnificent statue of Saint Privat as well as a Christ on the Cross.
