SAINT-CHÉLY-D'APCHER

The town of Saint-Chély d'Apcher was profoundly marked by the personality of Théophile Roussel, a famous 19th-century politician and physician. It still preserves numerous reminders of his presence, such as his former residence, now the town hall, his tomb in cemetery number 1, and the town's former hospital. The town's architecture retains vestiges of the old town, with the remains of the former castle in the Place du Portalet and the remnants of the ramparts visible from the Rue des Charchaires. The market square features buildings dating from the 17th century and houses with projecting overhangs where merchants once sheltered. Other buildings are remarkable for their age, such as the Bonnet house with its half-timbering and blue window frames. Other points of interest are scattered throughout the town, such as the small Notre-Dame-des-Voyageurs chapel in the north, built in 1850.
