ROC DE PEYRE

Castle

in SAINT-SAUVEUR-DE-PEYRE

Located in the heart of the Peyre region, the Roc de Peyre site rises to nearly 1,180 meters above sea level and overlooks the Aubrac plateau. Due to its exceptional and once strategic location, the site was crowned from the 12th century onwards by a castrum, a fortified village, the seat of the Lords of Peyre. From the 10th century, the Lordship of Peyre experienced a meteoric rise and became one of the most powerful families in Gévaudan and the Kingdom of France. Today, no trace remains of the fortress, destroyed during the Wars of Religion as an act of reprisal. The family's conversion to Protestantism led to the organization of Protestant resistance in northern Gévaudan during the Wars of Religion. It was for this reason that, in 1633, Cardinal Richelieu ordered the dismantling of the castle. The Peyre barons would later choose other locations to rebuild their headquarters (notably at La Baume).
