REMAINS OF THE CHURCH OF NOTRE-DAME DE BEAULIEU

Chapel

in PAULHAC-EN-MARGERIDE

Although its exact location is impossible to pinpoint, it would seem that an earlier, so-called "true" Beaulieu existed long before the current site. However, the ruins have never been identified. Nevertheless, a vast mass of stones unearthed a few hundred meters away on the eastern slope suggests the presence of a once imposing building. The chapel once housed a statue of the Virgin Mary, particularly venerated during two major pilgrimages: one in September and the other, still celebrated today, on August 15th. This statue of the Virgin Mary is now located in the church of Paulhac. During the Middle Ages, the chapel also served as a refuge for pilgrims on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago), who could find shelter there. In 1961, a replica of the statue was installed on the rock near the Church of St. John the Baptist in Paulhac. Access to the chapel's remains is from La Vachellerie, following the GR Tour de Margeride (marked with red and yellow blazes) southward.
