OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY CHURCH

In the commune of Massegros, the village of Recoux boasts a charming Romanesque church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. It is entered through a porch on the south side of the building. Inside, a single nave with a barrel vault opens onto a polygonal apse with a semi-dome vault. The arcades on the sides of the apse, framing the bays, are punctuated by red sandstone columns with sculpted capitals. The exterior chancel features a similar design. This carefully crafted composition of the chancel, along with the barrel vaulting, characterizes Romanesque architecture and allows us to date these parts of the building to the 13th century. Four later chapels open onto the nave, one of which contains a pointed-arch niche housing a statue of the Virgin Mary. A niche above the entrance gate to the cemetery also contains a statue of the Virgin Mary. This rather rare feature can also be found in the church of Saint-Georges de Lévéjac.
