NOTRE-DAME AND SAINT-PRIVAT CATHEDRAL

In 1368, Pope Urban V—a native of the Gévaudan region—commissioned the construction of the cathedral.
In the 16th century, Bishop de la Rovère had the two bell towers erected.
The “Non-Pareille”—the largest bell in Christendom at the time of its casting in 1516—was installed in the main bell tower.
The cathedral, largely destroyed during the Wars of Religion, was rebuilt exactly as it was between 1600 and 1630.
It was subsequently enhanced with a rich and varied array of furnishings, including the grand organ (17th century), Aubusson tapestries (early 18th century), choir stalls, a Black Madonna, and more.
