Mende boasts a rich and varied history.
As the former capital of the Gévaudan region, the town enjoyed its heyday during the 17th and 18th centuries—a legacy evident in the beautiful houses scattered throughout the historic center and the outlying districts.
The town is home to a wealth of historic landmarks, such as the magnificent Cathedral of Notre-Dame and Saint-Privat, the Notre-Dame Bridge, the Penitents’ Tower, and the 19th-century pharmacy of the old hospital (accessible via guided tour only).
