Le Monastier takes its name from the construction of a Benedictine monastery in 1062 by Aldebert I of Peyre. Over the centuries, the village developed around the monastery and the Church of Saint Sauveur, which also dates from the 11th century. The recent creation of the GR70, also known as the Urban V Trail, which runs from Nasbinals to Avignon, makes Le Monastier an important stop on this route, serving as the gateway to the Aubrac Regional Natural Park. To learn more about Le Monastier, a 13-stage historical trail in the old part of the village will reveal its 900 years of history. And to discover the heritage as a family in a fun way, follow Louis, a hiker on "On the Urban V Trail," and meet Le Monastier's most illustrious resident, Urban V!
