HAMEAU SAINT-PIERRE DES TRIPIERS

Saint-Pierre des Tripiers is a small village of the Causse Méjean whose history enlightens us about the past of the Causse and its inhabitants.
Many archeological traces are evidences of very old farming in the region, from the first centuries of our era. After a decline during the Early Middle Ages, the prosperity came back aroung the year one thousand, which led to the decoding of the abandoned land, and the development of localities on the Causse, possible thanks to the demographic growth. The enlargement, at the time, of the church and the priory buildings attached to it, show this rise.
The name of the village was originally Saint-Pierre des Essarts (from the verb essarter: decipher) but, because of an ignorance of the Langue d’Oc, the central administration transformed it into Tripiers.
The hamlet has kept a large number of ancient buildings, as well as a magnificent elm tall of 28 metres, labelled ‘Arbre Remarquable de France’.
