FORMER FORTIFIED SQUARE OF GREZES

Castle

in GREZES

The curious conical limestone outcrop of Truc de Grèzes successively supported a Gallic oppidum, a Roman castrum, and a feudal fortress dismantled in 1632. These architectural remains are located at the top and bottom of Truc de Grèzes. The ruins at the top can be dated to the Early Middle Ages and demonstrate impressive solidity. Details reveal the remains of a tower or keep built with pinkish stones. The lower part of the castle is in better condition. It should be noted that this structure has been modified over time, by different eras and owners. The historical remains have witnessed the passing of centuries and the eruption of conflicts such as the Hundred Years' War, and have gradually disappeared. A few traces remain of the location of a room and a well that was lined with stones for safety.
