In Barre-des-Cévennes, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is a 12th-century Romanesque building, listed as a historic monument since 1931. Originally a priory church built of limestone, it has undergone several alterations over the centuries, harmoniously blending Romanesque architecture with Gothic influences. Its single nave, with a semi-circular vault, was gradually enlarged by the addition of chapels lit by large mullioned windows. Externally, the chancel retains the characteristics of Romanesque art, with its semi-circular apse and its cornice adorned with modillions. A testament to the evolution of religious architecture in the Cévennes.
