CROSS LAKE SAINT-ANDÉOL

Lake Saint-Andéol is one of the most powerful symbols of the Aubrac region, being the only lake on the plateau with a surprising history. Known as the "Christianized pagan lake," Lake Saint-Andéol hosted unique processions in antiquity and at least since the 3rd century. Legend says that Saint Andéol undertook to Christianize the local population, leading them to abandon their pagan customs in this place. However, despite this intervention, these processions continued until the end of the 19th century, with clothing and food being thrown into the lake. A 19th-century cross overlooks the lake and offers a magnificent panorama for experienced hikers. At the time, a chapel dedicated to Saint Hilary also stood on the hills above the lake. Today, no trace of this building remains.
