COLLEGIALE DE BÉDOUES

In Bédouès-Cocurès, the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption bears witness to the history of Pope Urban V, who was born in 1310 at Grizac Castle, in Pont-de-Montvert. In 1363, he decided to have this fortified church built to house the tombs of his parents, members of the Grimoard family. Built of schist on a Latin cross plan, it comprised a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and, above it, the canons’ quarters. Damaged during the Wars of Religion, particularly in 1580, it was rebuilt on a smaller scale, following a Greek cross plan. Further unrest marked the Revolutionary period. Today, its fortified architecture bears witness to the religious heritage of the Tarn Valley. The collegiate church can be visited by appointment.
