CLOCK TOWER

Tower, Military

in LE MALZIEU-VILLE

The clock tower appears to date from the 13th century. It served as the feudal keep during the time of the Barons of Mercoeur. During the Wars of Religion, it became a prison when Mathieu Merle captured the town of Malzieu in 1573. Built of granite rubble, it has a square plan. Inside, there are four floors, which were originally accessed by a door on the first floor on the south side, used to limit intrusions. Today, the tower is crowned by a crenellated terrace. Its bell is dated 1470, although contemporary elements are also found on the structure, such as the current door and clock, which date from the 19th century. Remarkably restored in 2012 by the municipality, it has since been open to the public and offers a 360° panoramic view of the town and its surroundings. In addition, an exhibition of old photographs taken by the town council allows us to remember the Malzieu of yesteryear.
