CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was built around the same time as the first tower of Arzenc-d'Apcher Castle, at the end of the 12th century. However, it no longer has the same appearance today, the result of several renovations and extensions over the following centuries. The church is located near the castle, separated by an artificial moat. Romanesque in style, it has an apse dating from the early 13th century, constructed of medium-sized granite blocks. Typical of the Aubrac Highlands region, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption features a bell gable with two openings, erected in the 18th century. Inside, the sobriety and homogeneity of the Romanesque style prevail around a 14th-century chancel. One of the two side chapels contains remarkable vestiges of the church's seigniorial past, such as a keystone bearing the coat of arms of Apcher.
