CAZE CASTLE

The château consists of a roughly square main building, bordered to the south by the Tarn River and surrounded by a moat on the other sides. Circular towers flank the northeast and northwest corners, with a taller square tower projecting between them. The southwest corner features a square tower integrated into the façade, dating back to the 17th century. To the southeast stands a horseshoe-shaped tower, connected to the south façade by a canted wall section. All upper structures were restored or rebuilt during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The original structure is entirely incorporated into the current building. The southwest tower preserves a painted study featuring decoration dated 1637 and signed by Prunier. This room is known as the “Nymphs of the Tarn” study because its ceiling is divided into eight panels, each containing a portrait of a woman within a medallion. This decorative scheme represents a significant milestone in the study of Mannerist-style ornamental motifs.
