BUST OF SAVORGNAN DE BRAZZA

Savorgnan de Brazza, the famous explorer of the French Congo, settled in Marvejols, the capital of the Gévaudan region, where he is said to have hunted wolves, for the love of a beautiful aristocrat from Marvejols, Thérèse de Chambrun, whom he married in 1895. The sculpture of his bust, installed in the lovely public garden of Marvejols and inaugurated in 1946, was created by Henri Louis Cordie. It pays tribute to this explorer who conquered a part of Central Africa, "without ever shedding blood" and while fighting against slavery.
