BAHOURS FORTRESS

To strengthen the defenses of the episcopal city, the fortified house of Bahours was built to the northwest. It is a massive, square-plan structure with a central stone staircase. Dating from the early 17th century, it was built by Melchior Roux de Pomeirols, the diocesan tax collector, whose coat of arms is displayed inside the castle. Having fortified it without the canons' permission, he was forced to demolish "the turrets, the arrow slits, the gun ports, and the two dungeons." The castle was listed as a Historical Monument in 1995. It is privately owned.
