APCHER SHOEWING HOUSE

The farrier's frame, or ferradou, was used to shoe oxen for agricultural work. This craft is part of a collection of small heritage sites beautifully preserved in the village of Apcher, which attracts many visitors, primarily to admire the famous square tower. Characteristic features include the granite pillars, a fairly common material in this region. A yoke can also be seen fixed to the two front pillars. Its purpose, of course, was to hold the animal in a secure position, allowing for easy intervention. The unique design of the overlapping ridge tiles protects the ferradou from the elements. This ingenious method reinforces the structure against the wind.
