APCHER OLD CASTLE

Inhabited since the 10th century, the Apcher site was the former seat of the Barony of Apcher. The site was abandoned in the mid-17th century. Surviving structures include the keep, remnants of residential and outbuildings, and the castle chapel. The visible remains and artifacts on display date from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Perched on a rocky promontory, the keep rises to a height of fifteen meters, with a rooftop terrace crowned by machicolations. The structure served both a surveillance function and as a symbol of the lord’s power.
At the foot of the keep, one can still see the remains of residential and outbuildings—originally arranged around a central courtyard—as well as the chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.

The lower sections of the castle and the chapel are accessible year-round. Guided tours that include access to the top of the tower are available for groups by appointment, and for individual visitors during July and August.
