In the Cévennes region, the Fontmort obelisk was erected by republican Protestants on 15 August 1887 to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the "Edict of Tolerance" or "Royal Edict of Versailles" which brought freedom of worship to Protestants and Jews in France.
It is also a tribute to the martyrs of the Wars of Religion. In fact, you will see written on a stele these words: "On the occasion of the centenary of the Edict of Toleration, the sons of the Hugenots have raised this monument to religious peace and to the memory of the martyrs".
The site also offers a magnificent panorama of the Cévennes valleys and a shady setting for a siesta or picnic.
