As you wander through its medieval alleyways—whether by chance or by following the designated historical trail—the heritage of the “Belle du Gévaudan” reveals itself.

Marvejols became a “Royal Town” in 1307 when Philip IV (Philip the Fair) designated it the capital of the Gévaudan region. Fortified during the Hundred Years’ War, the town converted to Protestantism in the 16th century. During a siege by the troops of the Duke of Joyeuse, three-quarters of the population were massacred, the town was burned, and the fortifications were destroyed; however, Henry IV ordered the town’s reconstruction starting in 1601. The Soubeyran, Chanelles, and Théron gates stand as witnesses to this turbulent era and served as the only entry points into the town.
