In 2011, the team at the Adoc theatre company – one of whose members is the son of a farmer – set out on the road to meet farmers, both men and women, in order to understand the decline of family farming. Drawing on the testimonies they gathered and their research, they created the show *Nourrir l’Humanité, c’est un métier* (presented at the Ciné-théâtre in 2017). A cry of love and distress that shed light on the difficult daily reality of a profession. Ten years on, the company is hitting the road again to bring the project up to date, reflecting today’s realities. By reconnecting with the farmers they had previously interviewed, new questions emerged regarding how their circumstances have evolved and their prospects for the future. They also went to meet those who have chosen to farm differently through organic farming, agroforestry, permaculture, short supply chains and so on, exploring their models, hopes and disappointments.
On stage, these collected testimonies come to life through direct speeches, videos and dreamlike scenes. This nuanced and sensitive performance invites us to share in these stories. The hard work, emotion, intimacy, poetry and humour of the farmers then resonate with our own beliefs and convictions.
